Make Time (part 2): Recharge

Yesterday, I wrote about how we should prioritize the things we want out of life. If I want a better marriage, I better spend time with my spouse. If I want a higher income, I need to spend more time developing skills that are relevant to my current workplace (or even the job I want to do someday).

But I failed to mention something extremely important that we lose sight of whenever we focus too much on going the next step: Do we have the gas in the tank required to get there?

Almost as important as making time to work is making time to rest. You have to recharge and refresh yourself in order to tackle new challenges with new thinking. This means being sure to prioritize rest when you feel like you are about to burn out.

It doesn’t really matter what you need to do to rest, just do it and be sure to rest productively (that means recharging, not overcharging).

When a battery is overcharged, it starts to die quickly. It becomes worse and worse at holding a charge and it eventually becomes useless. However, if you never recharge a battery, it’s just as useless as one that can’t come off the charging cable. Neither is doing its job!

So, be sure to take time and rest. Make time to rest. Prioritize rest above other things sometimes. Otherwise, those other things suffer and you end up just as useless as a dead battery.
